I worked with Metis Theatre on a collaborative and immersive experiment for the invention of the future, WE KNOW NOT WHAT WE MAY BE. It invited an audience to rehearse possible tomorrows. Dealing with big ideas like artificial intelligence, automation, universal basic income, carbon tax and intellectual property in the context of climate change, this performance installation put people at the heart of the decision-making process.

Commissioned by Artsadmin for their Green Commission 2018, WE KNOW NOT WHAT WE MAY BE was presented by the Barbican in September 2018 as part of, The Art of Change season, which explores how artists respond to, reflect and can potentially effect change in the social and political landscape.

Part conference, part durational artwork, part immersive installation, WE KNOW NOT WHAT WE MAY BE invites conversation – and each ‘shift’ opened with a talk by a visionary speaker. You can explore the subjects the audience explored and hear from the visionary speakers here.

I know I need to write about the shows I am in whilst I am in them, but I always seem to get swept away into the world of the work only to remember my blog when I have come out the other side. 

A few years ago I was in a production of Eve Ensler’s A Memory, a Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer which was to raise money for a Congolese charity called City of Joy. They offer shelter, education and support for women who’ve suffered abuse or are separated from their families. I’ve always remembered that experience and when I got this role, I felt a slight dread at having to re-enter that emotional space again. Then of course I felt bad because I have the choice, whereas people living that reality have none...

I realise that I have been swamped in the world of work and have written nothing about the most extraordinary experiences of my artistic life. I have spent 5 months immersed in the world of Loraine Hansbury and Yaël Farber.

Les Blancs was written by Lorraine Hansbury at the age of 34 as she died of cancer. It has long been described as a museum piece, considered by some unfinished, as she died before the work had been produced. Set in a fictional African country it takes on the task of presenting and explaining the complex legacy of colonialism. Not surprising that it was left untouched by the big artistic establishments for so long but sadly despite being written in 1965 completely relevant to the present day.

However the National Theatre under the exciting and ground breaking momentum of new Artistic Director Rufus Norris took on such a piece of work together with the creative team lead by Yaël Farber, including additional dramaturgy by Drew Lichtenberg, Imogen Knight as movement director, the design by Soutra Gilmour, Lighting by Tim Lutkin and Sound and Composition by Adam Cork, Les Blancs was given life again on an epic platform.

I joined the 10th Birthday Bash of The Miniaturists at The Arcola Theatre last Sunday performing Stephen Jeffreys' Kampala directed by George Islay Calderwood. Kampala is three snap shots of Uganda's history from Independence to the today. Seen through the eye of 4 students. It was wonderful to be part of the now institution that is The Miniaturists. Working alongside 5 writers, directors, casts all set within the hubbub of The Arcola. Five completely different worlds came alive for 2 short performances only. I hope the Miniaturists will continue for another 10 years and that I may have the chance to play within its walls again.

October saw me with my first creative engagement with The Faction as part of the core ensemble. The Faction were commissioned to write and create a short piece of theatre based on the ideas and imagery of Film Noir. Loving a challenge Mark Leipacher co-artistic director of The Faction wrote Mörder, based on the Fritz Lang film M. The ensemble cast of 5 made up of Faction Core Ensemble members was directed by co-artistic director Rachel Valentine-Smith. Together we created a epic evening of high drama in the atmospheric settings of Waterloo's The Vaults.

THE YOUNG VIC SUMMER 2015

“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy...” 

I was fortunate enough to be accepted onto Lisa Wolpe's TranShakespeare workshop in association with The Young Vic, Kings College and The Gap Salon.  Lisa Wolpe is an actor, director, teacher, producer and activist. Working to create more space on stage for women, trans' actors and ethnic minorities. She founded Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company, an award-winning all-female, multi-cultural theatre company in 1993.

Whilst on a world tour of her one woman show "Shakespeare and The Alchemy of Gender" together with Master voice tutor Christine Adaire and Acting coach Daron Oram we embarked on a week exploration of gender swapped Shakespeare. I took on the role of Hamlet alongside actor Giovanni Bienne playing Ophelia. The result was a thrilling exploration of character and new perspectives of playing Shakespeare.  Plus the new ambition of taking on Hamlet in its entirety!!!

Working on New Play WWDA by Bonnie Greer

WOMEN AT RADA SUMMER 2015

I'm very excited to be cast in a rehearsed reading of new play "WWDA" by Bonnie Greer.  

WWDA is an adaption of Henrik Ibsen's 'When We Dead Awaken' and was read as part of The Women At Rada series.

In a bold new version of one of Ibsen's last and most difficult plays, Bonnie adapts this to imagine the future we are heading towards. A direct response to the political situation we find ourselves in 2015, Bonnie's bold and fearless adaption tackles some difficult questions.

I had the immense pleasure and masterclass of a rehearsal process, woking alongside Carmen Munroe, Corinne Skinner Carter, Nina Sosanya, Rebecca Scroggs and Carlyss Peer.  This play is exciting and challenging piece of work and I was privileged to be working on it alongside Mark Leipacher (director) and Bonnie at such an early stage!

I've just returned from a great time on the road first in Glasgow, then Brighton working with The Oran Mor and Brighton Theatre on Richard Crane's new play Vlad The Impaler. We scooped up 4 Stars form The Herald from Mary Brennan ( read the flu review here).

 "Iain Robertson and Anna-Maria Nabirye shape-shift tirelessly from servile minions to the wailing impalees that Vlad - like us - ate his lunch beside. Definitely one to chew over, afterwards!"

I also got to meet my all time Glaswegian heroes Liz Lochhead (my teenage heroine) who now serves as the Makar (the Scots equivalent of a poet laureate with a much cooler name) and actor Ronnie Letham AKA Ras B Nesbitt!!
